LBNL Nuclear Structure Group
Welcome to the Nuclear Structure Group, part of the Nuclear Science Division (NSD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The low-energy nuclear structure group leads a scientific program focused on studying and understanding the structure of nuclei at the limits -- of existence, of spin, etc. Our research is primarily carried out at major national and international facilities, such as FRIB at Michigan State University, ATLAS at Argonne National Laboratory, RIKEN and TRIUMF. The 88-Inch Cyclotron at LBNL, our home base, is also a key facility in our work. Our physics spans the nuclear chart, from the spectroscopy of the heaviest nuclei above Z = 100, to the detailed structure of the most exotic carbon isotopes.
Additionally, we are leaders in the development of gamma-ray detector arrays for nuclear science. First with Gammasphere, and now with the gamma-ray energy tracking array GRETINA, we are at the forefront of spectroscopic technologies. GRETINA, and in the future GRETA, will provide factors of 10-100 gain in experimental sensitivity for the study of exotic nuclei at current facilities and the future Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).
